How did Sanne do it?

  1. Supplementally strength trained at the X Gym for 20 minutes, once a week for last 3 weeks before contest.

  2. Switched from hours of conventional cardio each day to just 21 minutes of X Gym daily high intensity cardio for last 3 weeks before contest.

  3. Drank 100+ ounces of water each day.

  4. Kept protein above 200 grams per day, took carbs way down, and ate low fat.

Dear PJ and Sharm,                                                                                    Monday, May 19, 2003

In retrospect, a couple of days after what appears to me to be one of the absolute highlights of my fitness carrier, I’m reflecting on what exactly it was that made this experience so very different from my past experiences within the fitness industry.

A little bit of introduction to my background might be helpful to understand my starting point. Prior coming to The States I had done a couple of national contests in Denmark coached by my Danish bodybuilding trainers. I got some fairly good results there but found the whole process of dieting down and following the training schedule my trainers suggested extremely exhausting both mentally and physically.

My trainers are former bodybuilders of the old school and firmly believe in doing things the hard way, the only way. In short, diets consisting of white meat, egg whites, leafy greens and absolutely no supplements of any kind, with the exception of a weekly cheat day. Training consisted of literally tons of cardiovascular training and a 4-1-4-split weightlifting program. I felt I had to make a lot of social and physical sacrifices to comply with my program and wondered over and over despite my love of being on stage whether it was really all worth it or if it really was the only way.

When I came to The States I had not in my wildest dreams imagined that I would/could compete over here, but was fortunate enough to meet someone who would give me the opportunity to give it a shot. As it turned out she was yet another person committed to the “old school” of bodybuilding and as I started losing pounds I felt the exhaustion and my worries come creeping back.

However she gave up on me before I gave up on her methods, and luckily I was introduced to another way of doing things that totally changed my way of thinking about fitness.

Introduced to the X Gym and their training methods left me initially somewhat skeptical, because it was in contrast to everything I had learned about diets and training beforehand. But as I was on the verge of giving up on fitness, deciding that I just was not cut for it, I felt like I had nothing to loose and everything to win and gave it a try. I’m telling you, that is the best decision I have ever made in my years of training.

Gone are the hour-long sessions on treadmills, Stairmasters, bikes etc. Introduced is high intensity interval training of duration of maximum 21 minutes a day. Does it sound easy? It is not! But it is SO much easier to cope with having to give it full speed for 21 minutes than to engage in hours and hours of boring low impact cardio. Not only did this new approach prove easier to comply with concerning motivation, but the results I got were fantastic. I leaned down in no time compared to how long it usually took and my fat just seemed to melt away.

There is no way around dieting when you are training for a contest and you will be tired and feel a lower level of energy, but there is no need to make it harder on yourself by sticking with old methods that are not efficient. This new approach left me with an energy that I had never felt during my previous experiences.

X Gym’s weight training protocols are also very different from what I usually do. Again, the old bodybuilding traditions stuck with my habits and for years I’ve done a 4-1-4 split program. What characterizes this is that you do few but heavy reps aiming at tearing your muscle fibers to achieve growth. This method worked great for me for a while and then I hit a plateau. What X Gyms methods have taught me is that I achieve the best result if I vary my training. The protocols X Gym uses are diverse, meaning that they stress the muscles in different ways using different methods. The protocols are aimed at exhausting the muscle with lighter weights but continuing to exhaustion. This means that the result you get from the workout is not one of bulking up but one of getting stronger. So if you are looking to tone and strengthen your body without getting bulked up, X Gym’s training protocols are close to perfect for the cause.

I also found out that you can in fact use dietary supplements in your contest diet with great success. Dieting down is hard work but again there is no reason to make things harder for yourself than necessary, shakes are a good source of protein and most importantly they take the sugar-cravings you might experience. So use it if it helps you!

Another lesson I learned concerns the mental part of competing. Too many trainers and athletes focus on negative body images and the work you put into sculpting it. The strategy is to “fight” your body and the motto of “no pain, no gain” is taken way too literally. Let it go! You do not have to fight your body, it will be more than willing to shed fat if you give it what it needs, and stop letting negative thoughts drive you. I know it sounds a tat alternative, but it is true. Try it!

So PJ and Sharm, thanks for giving me an awesome experience and a very useful perspective on how much fun fitness is supposed to be…. always!
